The directions

.

The best way to reach Stalling Busk is from the A1.

Come off the A1 at the Leeming Bar exit, A684, turning west towards Bedale.

Follow the A684 through Bedale and on towards Leyburn. Stay on the A684 through West Witton and Aysgarth.

About 1 mile after the small village of Worton  you will reach Bainbridge but before entering the village there is a road to Stalling Busk on your left. This is a narrow country lane. There is one left turn, after about 1 1/2 miles: this is signposted right to semerwater BUT you will need to turn LEFT up a steep hill and will soon reach Stalling Busk.

Bells Cottage is the second house on the right after entering the village. It has a plaque saying 'Bells Cottage. It has a white gate and is 'sandwiched' between two cottages. The road through the village runs directly beind it.

There is a more attractive route from the A684 from Bainbridge. Immediatly after crossing the bridge as you enter the village the road swings to the right to go through the village but if you go straight ahead for 150 yards and then turn left you can follow the road through Countersett. In Countersett turn left and down to the lake and on up the hill to Stalling Busk.

Alternate routes

Coming from the north west, Stalling Busk may be reached by the A684,travelling east from the M6. Leave the M6 at junction 37 and turn east towards Sedburgh. Follow the A684 to Bainbridge and follow the instructions as above.

Another and more scenic route takes the A660 through Ilkley. At Addingham turn right along B6160 and follow the route to Bolton Abbey. From Bolton Abbey follow the road to Burnsall, Kettlewell then Buckden. At Buckden you have two choices:-

a) Take the left fork. This is a particulary (exceptionally narrow) road taking you up little dale and up over the top (Fleet Moss) and down a very steep road to Gayle and Hawes. When meeting main road in Hawes (A684) turn right. After about one mile there is a hidden turn leading through a village called Burtersett. In the village you turn left and follow through to Countersett where you turn right and down to a lake (Semerwater) and on to Stalling Busk.

b) At Buckden turn slightly right and follow the road over the top to Aysgarth. When you meet the main road (A684)  turn left and continue to Worton above.

Finding the Cottage in the village

As you come down the steep hill into the village, the road actually sweeps round to the right and Bells Cottage is on the right just on the bend. It is the second cottage on the right and has a plaque on the wall with the name.
