Bells Cottage

Bells Cottage in Stalling Busk

The cottage is unuasual because it is a two bedroom detached building. We think that it could have been built as early as the 1620's.

Bells Cottage is in a village called Stalling Busk in Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It is near Semmerwater which is the largest natural lake in Yorkshire. It is more accurate to describe the valley in which it is situated as being Raydayle which runs South from the confluence with the river Ure. The river runs from the lake and joins the Ure at Bainbridge. It is called the river Bain. It is only three and a half miles long and is the shortest river in England.

Stalling Busk

Bells Cottage is in Stalling Busk which has only 10 houses. Stalling Busk is home to the jam and sauce factory Raydale Preserves. There is a church next to our cottage, St ??. The local graveyard is a short walk away from the village at the site of the ruined church, reached by footpath halfway to Semmerwater.

It is said that 100 years ago there were many more buildings in the village. There was a Blacksmith and three public houses. The reason for it being so busy was that it was on the drove road from Scotland to London using the broad track near the village "The Stake Road".

The village had the school for the whole valley but the building is now used as a social centre.

Wensleydale

Wenslydale used to be called "Uredale". The river which forms the valley is the only one of the Yorkshire Dale's Rivers Which does not take it's name from the valley. It is calles the River Ure.

Just a few steps away from our cottage you can see an amazing view of Wenslydale. You may have heard of Wenslydale cheese. The factory is in Hawes (our local town), Hawes has plenty of shops including a Spar and a particularly good delicatessen called Elijah Allan's. Also in Hawes there are chocolate, Rock & Gem, Walking and gift shops. There are four pubs.  There is also a National Park Center and a museum in the old train station. There is also a market which is held on Tuesdays.

Bainbridge is a very beautiful village built round a large village green with some stocks in the middle. Near the river there is the national park office.

A nother intresting town is Askrigg wich was once famous for making clocks. One building was used as Skelldale House in the television serise "All Creatures Great And Small".
